Tokyo-Paris: Two Museum Labs
With the launch of the second phase of its project inaugurated in October 2010, Louvre - DNP Museum Lab continues to strive to allow as many visitors as possible to enjoy a new way of approaching art.
Selected multimedia displays developed in Tokyo are now gradually being transferred to the Musée du Louvre in Paris in order to offer visitors from around the world a unique experience - discovering art through digital technology in an actual museum environment. The first relocation of this kind took place in June 2011 in the Department of Decorative Arts. In 2012 it will be the turn of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities to adopt similar multimedia resources in the exhibition of its permanent collections, followed by the Department of Paintings in 2013, and the Department of Sculptures in 2014.
And visitors to Tokyo are always welcome to enjoy a sneak preview of the innovative proposals for the future of art appreciation. Not to be missed!
Museum Lab is keen for the initiatives implemented in Tokyo and Paris to be disseminated more widely to other museums or cultural and educational establishments, thereby seeking to bring visitors a richer art experience, through a new way of approaching it.
Multimedia displays from the 7th Presentation "Diplomacy and Sèvres Porcelain" are now in place at the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
Among the features that were on offer to Tokyo visitors until May 15, 2011 as part of the 7th Museum Lab Presentation, the multimedia displays entitled "Manufacturing technique of soft-paste porcelain" and "Court dining in France" can now be seen in Paris. Restyled to blend harmoniously into the historical setting of the Louvre, they are to be found in Rooms 93 and 95 of the Department of Decorative Arts (first floor, Richelieu wing) at the entrance to the magnificent Napoléon III Apartments, refurbished during the Grand Louvre renovation program.
This is the first time that multimedia resources from Museum Lab have been incorporated into the Musée du Louvre's permanent collections, thus marking the transition from research undertaken by Museum Lab since October 2006 to in situ application in order to offer a new approach to art.
Though these unfamiliar displays may appear bemusing at first, visitors find them absorbing. Many stop to check them out during their visit to the world's largest museum (around 35,000 exhibits), lingering with interest over the animated explanations in full.
Representatives from the Press were invited to experience the fruit of this Franco-Japanese partnership during an Open Day on June 8, 2011. The successful coexistence of artworks and multimedia within a single exhibition space elicited many comments and suggestions.
