Museum Lab at the Musée du Louvre
Henri Loyrette,
President-Director of the Musée
du Louvre from 2001 to 2013

The Musée du Louvre is heir to the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Ever since it was founded in 1793 it has striven to remain loyal to the universal vocation assigned to it. We endeavor to bring renewed life to this mission in the 21st century through a stance of openness and experimentation.

In concrete terms, this openness means that, over and above the 8.5 million visitors from all backgrounds that the Louvre receives each year, we are seeking to go beyond our borders to reach out to foreign visitors. The experiments we have conducted with Dai Nippon Printing for several years now have made us think about how the museums of tomorrow might be. The fruit of a close collaboration between teams at the Louvre and at DNP, Museum Lab takes the latest digital technology and applies it to the (re-)discovery of prestigious artworks from the Louvre's collections.

This unique experimental project lies at the core of the Louvre's preoccupations. How can new technology help all museum visitors in their understanding of artworks? How can we give the public an opportunity to see a work in a new light?

Several of the solutions initially presented in Tokyo will be re-used in our museum in Paris and offered to an inquiring audience that is both vast and diverse. The results of these experiments will thereby enhance the way our collections are presented within the Musée du Louvre and, we hope, will also be of benefit to other museums.

Thanks to the expertise of DNP and the Louvre, Museum Lab is a special space where the public can witness how we use modern developments in the service of art, and technology in the service of aesthetics.
